If you’ve ever suffered painful cracks in the corners of your mouth or even just had chapped lips, you’ve been victim of a condition called angular cheilitis. Also known as perlèche or cheilosis, this problem usually appears as deep cracks or splits in the corners of the mouth.
The causes of cheilitis are many. It may start by something as simple as being out in cold weather and licking your lips, which is frequently how it starts with children. When they wet their lips in hopes of temporary relief, the condition only worsens.
Some studies have shown that a common cause of perlèche to be linked to certain vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies or malnutrition. In these cases, the cure may be to include certain foods that have been missing from the diet.
Some cases may be caused by bacterial infection, in which the prescribed treatment will usually include the application of certain topical creams or ointments. More severe cases may call for oral medications to be consumed, or, sometimes injections of B-12 complex vitamins.
As with most things, the Internet is full of plans and programs boasting their particular solution to the problem. Some are touted to be ‘all-natural’, ‘holistic’, etc., and more than one can be quoted as saying their method is the ‘one and only’ one that works. Here’s the bottom line.
Cheilitis can be caused as a result of many factors. The culprit could be a fungal or yeast infection. It could also be a bacterial or viral problem. People with ill-fitting dentures are susceptible, as are children sucking on a pacifier or their thumbs. Exposure to cold, wind and sun can also play a part, as can a reaction to certain drugs and certain foods. If you have dry skin, you’re also prone to suffer this malady.
And, just as there are myriad causes, there are just as many potential remedies available. But none of these will be of any use to you if they don’t succeed in relieving your symptoms and, more importantly, prevent the condition from returning. Believe it or not, many of the ‘cures’ out there on the market may give temporary relief from the painful symptoms, only to allow the disease to return with a vengence, worse than before.
Personally, the idea of taking drugs in the form of pills or injections doesn’t sound so appealing. I kind of like the idea of angular cheilitis treatment – a simple remedy that’s been proven to work by others and derived by natural means. It just makes sense.
